Florentine businessman Alessandro Bastagli, new head of Shanghai Tang, after announcing his acquisition at Istituto Marangoni during a public conference at the end of 2017, chose Milan AW 2018/19 fashion week in Palazzo Serbelloni to talk about the new direction of the brand. This has been entrusted to Florentine designer, Massimiliano Giormetti, ex-Creative Director at Ferragamo and chosen not just for his skills, but also for a shared passion for antique books, of which both men are avid collectors.
The collection in terms of details and prints, is a nod to Chinese culture, in which Massimiliano says he immersed himself while seeking out suggestions and history. The shapes are western and create a hybrid look with a bold impact. Long-standing collector of Chinese art and crafts, he has taken his inspiration from ancient Chinese traditions, transferring them to his own ideas and bringing them up to date with a contemporary style approach. “Contamination”, as the designer stresses, “of different, complementary types of DNA is the foundation of an unexpected expressive territory for thousands of inspirations and possibilities”.
