Selected by Evelina Bazzo, design strategist, seven women designers were invited to create pieces of furniture by De Castelli, a company specialised in metal finishes. The collection, named “Tracing identity”, was presented during the Salone del Mobile 2017 in the De Castelli showroom in Corso Monforte, Milan. The brief did not specify any particular function, but asked the participants to give free rein to their design skills and expressive characteristics following a visit to the De Castelli factory. Tracing identity is a limited edition: only 100 marked and numbered pieces of each work will be produced. A meeting of all the designers was held on 27 June at the Triennale Design Museum in Milano to present a video and the catalogue published by Castelli in Aria. Each designer recounts their own personal experience, starting from their source of inspiration. The meeting was followed by an animated discussion about the difference between designs by men and those of women. And, as usual, there were still a few male designers who insisted on underlining the difference of quality between the two approaches!
