The title of the recent book by Matteo Guarnaccia “Fashion Sabotage”, published in January 2017 and dedicated to unconventional fashion, will also be the ideal title for the next exhibition to be held at the MAD in New York, one of the most active museums of applied arts, always quick to document the latest cultural movements and trends. The exhibition “Counter Couture: Handmade fashion in an American Counterculture” will be opened on 2 March, 2017, and will focus on celebrating the hand-made fashion and style of the 1960s and 70s, often associated with the hippie movement. This “Counter” culture detaches itself from the conformism of the previous decade and promotes an alternative lifestyle. Libertarian counter culture bases itself on self-sufficiency and self-expression. The fashion linked to this so-called “Counter” culture includes clothes, accessories and jewellery with decorations and embroideries, characterised by ethnic elements that deliberately flaunt their hand-crafted identity.
